Edwardian Extension and Renovation
The original house was a solid brick Edwardian, with tiled roof, 3 metre high ceilings and timber floors.
Cameron Construction had previously constructed family room addition at the rear and on the basis of our previous association was engaged to construct new upper floor addition.
The clients needed more room to accommodate their extended family.
They required a separate parent’s bedroom area upstairs with its own en-suite and walk in robe area, and an associated gallery area. The bedroom was to have a balcony at the front as an extension of the bedroom and also so as to take advantage of the block’s elevated position and impressive views towards the Melbourne CBD area.
While wanting the project to fulfill modern requirements the clients was very particular about integrating the new addition in with the existing, and maintaining the original style of the house.
Due care was given to the construction of new entry steps, the internal stairs, to brick selection, to the eaves treatment, and to the timber fretwork and balustrading of the balcony upstairs.
Particular attention was given to the restoration of the timber wall panelling in the entry way which was affected during the installation of the stairs.
The final result is an upper floor addition which is sympathetic to the original house while still fulfilling modern needs. It is light and bright, generously proportioned and with plenty of windows to take advantage of the views while still retaining privacy from its neighbours.
